I am a 30-something woman earning her life as a lawyer in a top firm. When I say “a top firm”, I mean: as per the statistics of a system where size is the most important of it all (remember: it’s a men’s world).
So, as per the latest statistics (as I said, these are statistics. As such, they do not always reflect reality. Of course.): (1) It is more likely than not that I earn 20% less than my male counterparts; (2) To reach the same recognition level, I must prove myself twice as much as my male counterparts.
I will not change my gender (although I must admit, I sometimes thought about it as a quick fix. But no. Definitely not.). I will not give up my career as a lawyer. I will not change the system on my own. But I wonder… Do you, men, truly believe that your mother, sisters and daughters deserve that?
If your answer is yes and you are above 35, you are a member of the lost generation, we do not care – you will soon die of cancer or heart attack and we thank you for that.
If your answer is yes and you are below 35, please urgently consult a psychiatrist. He will explain you, with plenty of empathy, why you are still single. He will help you be a happier person. Hopefully.
If your answer is no, then spread the word now, do your share and support women’s legitimacy on the workplace.
How? Let them have a seat at the table.
